The product represents the issue of mental illness. It shows what people can experience if they have schizophrenia. Like hearing voices that aren't there. Mental illness in media is normally portrayed as hurtful thing. As something that normally makes someone a villain when in reality they just need help. That stigma is insanely hurtful for people that deal with serious mental illness. As someone who has a parent that deals with schizophrenia, I've seen it first hand. The person can’t differentiate their reality from the false one. They’re both existing at the same time. They can’t trust their own eyes, brain, or ears. While mental illness is a scary thing to watch someone go through. You can only imagine how scary it is for the person who's experiencing it. Some people have to experience the side effects of mental illness for years before they’re eligible to be diagnosed. Like Borderline Personality Disorder is only able to be diagnosed after the age of 18. While other m...

Ran into some problems

Image
Hello and welcome back! i have some news for you all. While editing we ran into our problems. So the group decided that we missed some vital scenes within the film. Most of the scenes are finished, but some of the scenes that were shot didn't fit with the plot. Now there's already been some reshoots, but problems were ran into with that also. As you all know, there has been a lot of scding conflicts within the group. But we did what we could. Me and Franchesca took on the role and redid a scene without Omina as the main character. Originally it was Omnia's character meeting up with Franchesca's, but Omnia was unavavible to film. So, it was switched to Franchesca's character getting stood up by Omnia's character. I'm actually very happy with how the filming itself turned out. There was a lot of cool shots that were done. Franchesca's acting was also surprisingly good, especially because she was so worried about how her acting was going to turn out. There...

Start of editing

Image
Hello and welcome back everyone. The editing has began. The editing has been split between the group. I'm going the beginning of the film, Franchesca is doing the middle and Omnia is doing the end of the film. I'm going to be the one responsible for a lot of the titles. Which i' not going to lie im worried about. While i have edited before, i haven't done title editing. So, this will be my first time doing it. I'm hoping it's not going to be that hard. We shall see. Hopefully i won't be too rusty. The editing other then that shouldn't be that hard, i just have to make sure it follows with the other parts that are being edited. The group has to have a discussion about the editing style that's going to be used. Also a discussion about what music is going to be used is needed. There's a distinct idea of what type of music is going to be used. It's just finding the royalty free music that fits will be a little harder. I'm likely going to use...

Done with filming

Image
Hello everyone welcome back! I'm very glad to say the filming has been finished for Bedlam. More filming was done throughout the week for last scenes we needed. Now i don't know for sure if the filming is officially finished, because editing hasn't started so i have no idea how everything will look when it's all done. If more filming has to be done then so be it. The last filming that was done was at Fransheca's house. The group wanted a scene at a psych ward and obviously weren't able to go to one and film. So some improvising was done. I had to be very careful when filming in the room because the room had to be bare. A lot of stuff had to be moved around. It worked a lot better than expected and was definitely the best choice out of all our bedrooms. Mine was already used in the production, and i have way too many posters and random things on my wall. Omnia's room is also pretty lively too. Fransheca's room has white and grey walls. Which worked very ...

two locations down

Image
Hello everyone and welcome back! i've been very busy lately. More filming was done this week, so we're almost done. One of the places we were going to film was a cafe. It took two tries to find one that would let us film though. The first place we tried was actually my workplace and they didn't let us. Was messed up right? I get it though, my cafe is very busy and people may get in the shots that don't want to be in them. It's all about consent and everything. But, the place we filmed was better than my cafe. A lot quieter and it has different rooms, so we just stuck to one place. We of course asked for permission and got food. I had the best latte ever also. Will definitely be back again for more. The scenes were done pretty smoothly, except that one waiter got in the shot. It was okay though and they apologized profusely. Was a little awkward, but it was pretty funny. After the cafe scenes were done the group went to a mall near by. When filming there the group h...

small bits of filming

Image
Hello and welcome back everyone! i hope you've all been doing well. I've been doing pretty good myself i can't lie. I do have to say though that filming has been very hard. As i've mentioned everyone within the group is very busy. Its definitely been getting in the way of filming. A little bit of filming was done eaalier this week. It was done at my house before anyway went to work. So it was only around 30 seconds that was done. It was mainly because the shots that were filmed were very hard to do. It was text messages from a phone, which meant very little light could be used. You know that glare is crazy. It had to be even darker though, because it was supposed to mimic night-time. Even though it was like 3 P.M. All the blinds and doors had to be closed to have this effect. I'm lucky that i have a bush in front of my room which helps with getting my room dark. My blinds are also almost blackout. So it mimicked pretty well. Only the texting scene was finished thou...

Creating the postcard

Image
Hello again everyone! It's nice to see you all again. As the filming process begins there's a few things i must do to track the process. One of them is creating the postcard for our film along with the social media pages. I created the Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter accounts for the film. I know that a Youtube account also has to be created, but that's been giving me some problems not going to lie. But, you can find all the accounts @bedlam_film. The name for the film was carefully decided. Bedlam means a scene of madness, chaos or great confusion. It can also mean an asylum for the mentally ill. This will definitely to the film itself and also the aesthetic of the film itself. To add to the aesthetic of the film, i found pictures on pinterest for the media side of the project. I spent about an hour deciding between what photos i wanted to use for the postcard. I then made it with the ones i chose, then changed it after because i didn't like the way the photos looked...

Did NOT go as planned

Image
Hello and welcome back! I hope you all had an amazing time while i was away. I can’t lie, i didn’t. The plan for filming at my house didn’t go as planned. Pretty ironic right? But anyway- The reason it didn’t go as planned was because one of the group members got sick. The filming couldn’t be done, because it puts the rest of the group members at risk for also being sick. Then the filming would keep being postponed, so the filming wasn’t done. It’s a good thing too, because another member also got sick. I’m the only member that isn’t sick or getting over a sickness at the moment. I’m hoping it stays that way. The plan for filming first at my house is still on the way. It’ll be done this weekend. But there’s some conflicting work schedules. So, due to that i don’t think that all the scenes at my house will be completed at one time. There’s only a short window of time that the group can use that day to film. From my past experience in film, it takes around an hour to film a minute ...

Creating the posters

Image
Hello and welcome back! i hope you all had a nice time while i was away. While i've been away ive been making more media. Within the website, it's said that Bedlam is going to be shown at film festivals. I decided i wanted to create posters for the film festivals. It would give me things to post on the social media accounts. So, i created two different posters. One was for The Shorts film festival. The other poster was for the Millers Fest. Both are film festivals that were made up. I was originally going to create the poster from scratch. That ended up being very hard and i wasn't able to. I found templates instead, those made it a lot easier. I made it on my phone. So, i had to end up downloading a new editing app to use the templates i found. It was free thankfully. The app was Adobe Express. It was very easy to use which i'm very thankful for. The first poster was created quickly, but the second one gave me some trouble. I had to move the text and fix the size of i...

Finally able to begin

Image
Hello and welcome back! I hope everyone's been well as i've been away. So the production has finally started, but definitely not without some mishaps. Filming had been pushed back again, because there was scheduling conflicts. The group knew that this was likely going to be a problem as filming went on. The time between filming though will make the film turn out better though. There's days to decide what's the best and what deserves to be in the film. The first part of filming was at my house. Only around 2 minutes were able to be filmed. Not all the scenes that are supposed to be filmed at my house were done. The scenes that are filmed are just the beginning sequence. There's one scene that was filmed that's the longest amount of uncut filming i've ever done. It's about a 45 second scene, which includes a close up, an over-the-shoulder shot and a tracking shot. Its a lot of different types of shots within one. It surprising only took three tries to do....

Locations for filming

Image
Hello and welcome back! So, we plan on filming on this upcoming monday. The plan is to film at my house. The filming is going to be split up into several days. The different days will be for the different locations. The first location will be at my house, and that’s where majority of the film where take place. So, the bulk of the filming will be done. In the next coming week the other locations will be used. There is still the last scene that a location has to be chosen for. There’s 3 locations that are planned. The last location will only be needed for a very small clip, so it’s not that stressful to find. The location just has to fit the setting that’s imagined for the scene. The film won’t be shot in order, about like 70% of the film is at my house, but all the scenes are spread out through the film. The other locations will only be needed for small scenes. The mall is needed for a few scenes. The filming there will be a little tricky because some stores don’t allow you to fil...

These first 6 boxes is the main character waking up and going through her morning routine. When she leaves her house, she says bye to her mom. She hears her mom respond back, but when she gets outside she realizes that her mom isn't home.  The next 6 boxes is the main character hanging out with her friend at the mall. The main character watches as her friend starts stealing from a store.  The main character then calls out her friend on her actions. They walk out of the store into the parking lot and start arguing. .  The main character gets home from the mall and empties her bag. She texts her friend about what she did.  The last scene is t friend picking up her phone.  The best friend answers the texts. The friend argue back and forth again. The best friend claims she didn't put anything in the min characters bag. The argument ends with the main character slamming her phone ...

The plan

Image
Welcome back!!!!! So after having a long conversation with my group, we have come up with our overall plan to make this work.... So our story will basically show a girl having interaction but then be told none of that happened. The point is for her to seem like she is going insane but doesn't understand why. At the end, we show that the whole time she was in a psych ward, and none of what we showed in the movie happened.      The only issue is we need to figure out how we are going to film all of these scenes. Our first idea was to find an abandoned place to film the last scene of the psych ward but it's not the safest. However, one of our members has a sister that does things like that so she would know what is the safest for us to do. If we do end up going to an abandoned place we will use gloves, masks, and hand sanitizer. If that doesn't work we might just to another one of our rooms to show us being held in a facility. Don't worry we will be safe!...

Wanderer

Image
“Wanderer” By Mark O’ Brien and Jake Wilkins are yet another short film that falls under the Mystery/ Thriller Genre. This short film includes many elements in which apply to our chosen genre, Mystery. This short film is based on a male traveler who arrives at a secluded house around the evening time. As he is looking for shelter, he stumbles across a youngish couple that appears to be around his age group. They invite him into dinner in which later leads to the uneasy feeling of the woman. Leading to the following questions, “Could it be that the nomadic serial killer who has been stalking the area has just walked into their house?” “Will they survive the night?”  “Wanderer” was produced in way in which readers follow up with the following question “what is going to happen next” In this case, with the usage of sound/ noise. With quitter, less noisy sounds, this film allows for reader to maintain a less sudden approach. Background noise plays a very large role in the ...

Scruples

Image
After looking into a few short films in which applied to our genre, I found that that that “Scruples” by Adrian Powers was a great fit. This film is based on two ‘cleaners’ for a criminal gang who have been sent to tie up a loose end. However, one of them is an undercover cop who finds himself in a tricky spot. A slightly insincere account of how policeman would actually have to act Is the approach that overall surrounds this film.   This short film has great similarities when it comes to appealing to audience, including sounds. Commonly sound sounds in this genre include dramatic sounds that interpret exhaustion, or sudden surprise. Like found in the short film, background noise is intriguing and allows the audience to feel a sense of suspense. This also applies in terms of CLAMPS, in which the mystery genre often uses costumes that may make a character look often overlooked, like in the short film where they were basic-colored coats. Lighting is often dimmed d...

prosopagnosia

Image
This was by far a favorite, this storyline explains a man who lost his best friend, Julia with curly red hair, in a murder, however, he saw the killer but could not recognize their face due to his medical condition prosopagnosia- a condition that prevents a person from recognizing anyone's face. In the beginning, the man is being interrogated by an investigator, the investigator seems to get more aggressive with the man because he believes he is to blame for Julia’s murder. However, he explains he loves Julia very much and that he saw the clear but simply couldn't recognize him. The only thing he can say is he had a Yankee's shirt and was the same description as him. The investigator eventually gets evidence to believe him; they both end up driving to the crime scene to prove something which somehow causes follow-up questions including any past with Julia. The man dated Julia but he ended it due to him only seeing her in a platonic way, eventually, he got with another woma...

Jet

Image
For one of our films of research we did a thriller mystery called 'Jet.' Overall the film starts off with a man in a car about to shoot himself in the head,  but before he does anything he sees a little girl which stops him. He sits in silence allowing him to see the girl get abducted by a man in a van, he then follows the van to end up at the house she has been taken to. The man then walks up to the house with the gun he planned on using on himself. Two other men come out which results in them being shot. Then the man walks into the house to save the girl just to find her sitting unharmed. Though what happened isn't clear one could assume that she was safe and those people he shot were her family of some sort.      However, to get a sense of feeling instead of just a storyline, angles, costumes, props, and editing were key factors. The directors of this film used many wide shots, hidden angles like in a bush, point-of-view shots, close-up shots, trackin...

Research: How to make a short film

Image
Writing to what you have resources to is a strong saying that we’ll have to live by when developing our plot and script. We can only write with what we have.  There’s only so much we can do with the came ra that we’re filming with and the lack of mics. Knowing that we’ll need time to edit and fix the pacing of the film. There’s only 5 minutes we have, so we need to be careful on how much we film and the amount we’ll cut. Over filming is the best option, but we need to make sure the plot isn't one that doesn't have to be fully fleshed out to be able to understand. There does need to be payoffs of some sort and every scene has to count, there’s not room for filler. There also can’t be a lot of predictability within the film, which will be hard because of the groundhog type day plot we plan on using. T here has to be types of scenes that the audience won’t see coming , while also f ollowing the theme of the story . The theme will drive our plot, and it needs to be unders...

Comparing Le Jetee, the short, and 12 Monkeys, the full-length movie

Image
Part 1    T he film 12 M onkeys is a homage to LeJetee . They can’t be compared, because they aren’t the same thing. The short film is considered a photo-novel , while 12 Monkeys is an actual film. 12 monkeys uses dialog ue a nd scenes where people are act uall y act ing. Th e acto rs in LeJete e are also acting but not on the same way, they’re acting in pictures. Each photo has to be taken at the perfect moment to get the right shot. The story is left for the audience to play out in their head. Le Jetee’s sound comes from the narrator doing a voice over , which tells the story of the photos. The photos are in black and whit e, while the film is in color.  When creating a short film the same scenes can be used, it's how they’re used that matters. The context behind the scenes will change as the plot is driven. Using a different editing style when using the same scenes conveys a change of the meaning of scenes. The music will also change the feel of a scene. We...
